Queer
An umbrella term for identities that are not heterosexual or cisgender. Reclaimed by many as a positive identity.
Gay / Lesbian
A person attracted to people of the same gender. Lesbian is often used specifically by women.
Bisexual
Attracted to people of one's own gender and other genders. Not a phase; not confusion.
Transgender
A person whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned to them at birth.
Non-binary
A person whose gender identity does not fit exclusively within the categories of man or woman.
Coming out
Disclosing one's sexual orientation or gender identity. An ongoing process, not a single event.
Cisgender
A person whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth.
Heterosexual
Attracted to people of a different gender. Often called "straight." One orientation among many.
